Ben Thanh

Type of Cuisine: Vietnamese

Charlotte's Ben Thanh restaurant is named after the large Ben Thanh market in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), Vietnam. This market has offered fresh foods since the nineteenth century, and today it is a popular tourist site.

Ben Thanh restaurant is owned by Cuong Duong. Menu items are prepared by Duong's family who has been serving Vietnamese food in Charlotte since 1990.

More than 100 menu selections include Vietnamese appetizers, soups, hot pots, stir fries, noodle and rice dishes, curries, Vietnamese French coffee, avocado shakes, and grilled meats. Menu items include traditional Vietnamese ingredients such as coconut milk, fresh basil, tamarind, and lemon grass. However menu descriptions are written in English and are easily understood.

One of the best selections on the menu is the Vietnamese crepe Banh Xeo , a large yellow rice flour pancake filled with shrimp, pork, onions, and bean sprouts and served with a side of basil, cilantro, mint, and sweet-and-sour sauce. Another item well worth tasting is the Cary Tom, Ga, Dau Hu curry made with coconut cream, lemon grass chili, white onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes.

Ben Thanh offers something for everyone. Appetizer rolls are served fried or not. Many vegetarian selections are available. Those comfortable with spicy foods might want to try one of the hot pots, but for simpler tastes, menu items such as charbroiled chicken are also available. Whatever you select, enjoy!
