Taste of the World Restaurant Preview

Jerusalem Restaurant

Type of Cuisine: Middle Eastern

For a true taste of the Middle East , you need go no further than N. Sharon Amity Road . There you'll find Jerusalem Restaurant, offering a montage of food and dessert items from Jordan , Syria , Morocco , Libya , and Egypt .

Owner Yahia Al-baghdadi came from Jordan to the United States in 1979 and studied business administration at McKensie College in Chattanooga , Tennessee . He arrived in Charlotte in 1996, but it wasn't until the spring of 2007 that Yahia and a former business partner opened Jerusalem Restaurant. He is now the sole owner of the restaurant. Yahia's motivation remains to provide fresh, made-from-scratch cuisine for natives of Jordan , Palestine , Syria , Egypt , Morocco and for Americans that love high quality, authentic Middle Eastern food.

Peek behind the counter and you'll see food being prepared by Chef Nabil Natcha, a native Jordanian. Nabil's recounts many interesting experiences including his time as a chef at the American Embassy in Jordan, where he prepared food for notable people throughout the world. A peek at the menu lists all the traditional Middle Eastern dishes - stuffed grape leaves, hummus, falafel, and shish kabab (kabob). You'll also notice chicken roasting on a spit. The most popular item on the menu is the stuffed lamb, which many customers take home for special family meals. Yahia also recommends two additional favorites. One is the Arabian Sharwarma, which is a wrap prepared with a secret sauce only made here. The Mixed Grill is another favorite meal, which includes chicken, lamb, kufta (ground beef), onions, and spices, all grilled to perfection.

Make sure to save room for dessert; the kanafa has been described as “to die for.” It's made with shredded wheat and a sweet cheese that are cooked together, then covered with a red syrup and topped with chopped pistachios.

In addition to the authentic dishes, Yahia takes his guests one step closer to the Middle East with hookah pipes. The long, flexible (and colorful!) hose of the hookah serves to draw the smoke through a jar of water, where it is cooled. Smokers may choose from Jerusalem 's large selection of flavored tobaccos – flavors such as lemon, pineapple, peach, plum, cola, cappuccino, and even bubble gum. (Guests may smoke on the patio at any time; smoking is allowed in the dining room from 8:00 pm until closing.)

Catering and “to go” orders are available. No excuse for missing the great food at Jerusalem !
