Landmark Diner

Type of Cuisine: Greek

In the heart of Charlotte East there is one hopping spot that attracts folks who are looking for the perfect meeting place to those with a craving for Spanakopita. The Landmark Diner serves up generous portions nearly around the clock.

This Creative Loafing Best of Charlotte 2008 diner opened in 1990 by three Greek brothers, John, Larry, and Tommy Kaltsounis. Landmark's recipes include a few favorites from the Kaltsounis' Mother Fotini and a few other savory treats from their home of Karpenis, Greece. Mousaka (similar to lasagna) and Spanakopita (Spinach pie) are choice picks among diner regulars. Landmark also serves up American classics alongside their Greek specialties and is famous for their all day breakfast menu.

All three brother bring Restaurant experience from their first days in American when they all found work at New York City eateries. They moved to New York in the sixty's and worked ever job from busboy to owner. Larry, the youngest, has 30 years of experience as a pastry chief and he takes charge of making sure costumers can satisfy their sweet tooth with Landmark's Baklava and Kataifi. John was the original chef at the diner, but has passed the position on to his son-in-law Milton Polemides. The general manager is son, Angelo Kaltsounis.

The effort to keep the business all in the family helps ensure that Landmark's reputation for homemade food remains high. They are especially known for the care that goes into crafting their homemade dressings, soups, and sauces.

Over the past twenty years Landmark Diner has certainly become a must visit Charlotte Landmark.
