Pan Salvadoreño

Type of Cuisine: Salvadoran

The first thing you'll notice inside Pan Salvadoreño is the bakery case. It's filled with sweets and breads, like those owner Reynaldo Orellana ate growing up in El Salvador .

Although Pan Salvadoreño is a restaurant that features Salvadoran meals (breakfast is served until noon and lunch/dinner are served until closing), it's appropriate that the bakery sits prominently “up front.” When Reynaldo found himself out of work as a painter, he began baking at home. As the bakery business grew, he moved to a larger location. Later he decided to add a restaurant, and Pan Salvadoreño was born!

Grilled foods are popular in El Salvador , as are combination plates. The dish most often ordered at Pan Salvadoreño? Media Yarda, featuring grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, tortillas, and a salad.

Another distinctively Salvadoran dish is the pupusa. It's a thick, hand-made corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and meats and complemented by a side of red sauce. Pupusa is a traditional staple of the Pipil tribe – a community dating back three million years who lived in what is today western El Salvador . At Pan Salvadoreño you can choose a plain cheese pupusa or one stuffed with “mushed” pork meat and cheese.

It's not uncommon to find Pan Salvadoreño full of native Salvadorans enjoying Reynaldo's large portions. Neither is it uncommon to see native Vietnamese enjoying the pupusas; Reynaldo's wife, Lieu Nguyen, is Vietnamese. You'll also find Reynaldo and his Salvadoran friends next door at Ben Thanh, enjoying that restaurant's Vietnamese specialties. Truly an international experience!

At the time Reynaldo decided to add the restaurant, he realized the risk. Now he realizes it was well worth it. But there's no risk for you when dining at Pan Salvadoreño. You're sure to agree that Reynaldo made a “delicious” decision!
