Middle East Deli

Type of Cuisine: Middle Eastern

Middle East Deli is a grocery/deli/restaurant combined into one establishment. Surrounded by refrigerator cases large and small, you'll find every imaginable ingredient for Middle Eastern cuisine, including halal meats. Alex, the owner, came to the United States from Lebanon when he was a college student, some 34 years ago.

Although a small place, Middle East Deli is big on taste. In 2004 it was voted “best pick” for Middle Eastern food by Charlotte-area residents. The dining menu offers sandwiches, plates (including kabobs), meat and spinach pies, salads, and side orders.

Of special note on the menu is the fatoush. This salad is similar to what is commonly called a “Greek salad.” Alex serves it with feta cheese, or without.

Also of note is tabouleh, a salad made with tomatoes, green onions, cucumbers, and the main ingredient bulgur . Bulgur is wheat that has been parboiled, dried, and de-branned. A common ingredient in the Middle East , it is not as well-known outside that region.

Hummos (or hummus) is another popular dish at Middle East Deli. The chickpeas (garbanzo beans) are ground to a paste, much like a dip. Then olive oil is added to the ground chickpeas to enhance the flavor of the hummos.

Alex is quick to offer a couple of recommendations of his own. The number one seller at Middle East Deli is the Combo Plate which includes hummos, tabouleh, falafel, spinach pie, and garlic potatoes. Another of Alex's favorites is the Kabob – lamb, beef, and chicken on a skewer.

One grocery item in stock is worth mentioning - the bags of Turkish coffee. Turkish coffee is made from Brazilian coffee beans, processed and ground in Lebanon , resulting in coffee in the Turkish style. Just ask Alex to explain!
