Pollo Inka

Type of Cuisine: Peruvian

Pollo Inka opened in May 2007, with brothers-in-law Raoul Foure and Oscar Trelles as owners. Both were born in Peru and chose “Inka” as part of the restaurant's name in tribute to the Inca Indians who have lived there since before the arrival of the Spanish.

First on the menu at Pollo Inka is the signature item, Pollo a la Brasa, or Rotisserie Chicken (thus the “Pollo” in the restaurant's name). Diners may order a whole chicken or a smaller portion. Another popular item is Parrilla Inka – Meat Grill. This entrée is “for two” and consists of steak, chicken, beef heart, pork, and salami. The menu isn't limited to meat and chicken, though; you'll also find 23 fish/seafood entrees.

Potatoes are a large part of the Peruvian diet. At Pollo Inka, they're stuffed with tuna or shrimp or chicken, or boiled or deep fried, or served as French fries. Their potatoes are accompanied by mayonnaise, not ketchup, although ketchup is available upon request!

Other choices might surprise, as well. Corn-on-the-cob is Peruvian corn (large kernels) and is served with a side of yellow salsa and slices of cheese. Inca Cola is a carbonated drink, but it isn't brown; it's yellow, and with the flavor of bananas (very good). Dessert empanadas? They're stuffed with beef and boiled egg slices (delicious, but not sweet)!

Pollo Inka's brisk business has allowed for expanded hours, with breakfast now served on Saturday and Sunday. Look for fried pork, tamales, fried sweet potatoes, onions, coffee.

Raoul and Oscar lived in California but decided last year to make their homes in Charlotte . Both felt it would be a good place to bring up their children. As they've discovered, it's also a good place to start up a Peruvian restaurant!
