Valentino's Mexican Restaurant

Type of Cuisine: Mexican

One of Charlotte 's newest (Spring 2007) Mexican restaurants is Valentino's. Husband and wife owners Noe Salinas and Hilda Ramirez Muños came to the United States from Pachuca , Mexico . Noe's uncle is the gentleman in the chef's coat that you'll spot through the kitchen window.

Valentino's? Is this a Mexican restaurant? You'll have no doubt as you take a look at the extensive menu which includes (of course) quesadillas, tacos, fajitas, burritos, nachos, and enchiladas. You'll also find soups, salads, desserts, a breakfast menu, a vegetarian menu (nine items), combination plates, and Valentino's specials.

For breakfast (desayunos) Hilda recommends the enfrijoladas – three tortillas wrapped around scrambled eggs. They're topped with sausage, jalepenos, and a “gravy” of pureed beans and sour cream. Note: the breakfast menu also includes a club sandwich; in Mexico , club sandwiches are eaten for desayunos.

Hilda is quick to name her favorite dish - Alambre de Res – one of the Valentino's Specials. Prepared “for two,” it's made with beef, bacon, mushrooms, onions, cheese, and bell peppers and comes with a side of homemade pico de gallo (tomatoes, onions, jalepenos). Even two people may not be able to finish the large serving!

For dessert, try Pastel Tres Leches (three-milk cake) or Flan Napolitano (custard laced with cinnamon). No room for dessert? Dessert (or any menu item) is available “to go.”

A mariachi band serenades you on Sundays from 6:00 until 9:00 pm. When the band isn't playing, a juke box will serenade you with the latest Spanish language hits.

Why does a Mexican restaurant have a name so Italian? This story is sweet. Noe and Hilda asked their daughter to name to the restaurant. She chose Valentino's to honor her father and grandmother, both having a birthday on Valentine's Day.

Make no mistake . . . You're sure to love Valentino's any day of the year!
